Hey, i'm new at this so i thought i should let myself be known to other poekemon fans. Mind you, i'm new to the site not to the pokemon industry.

I really want to know how to connect to the GTS. I'm thinking it's some wireless connection to the internet or something but i just can't seem to get onto it.

Can anyone help me?

You're correct, you need a wireless connection.

The easiest way would be to ocate one of Nintendo's wireless hotspots There's 6000 in North America so hopefully you can find one nearby here
http://www.nintendowifi.com/hotspots/searchHotSpot.do

You can also buy little usb wireless dongles, Nintendo manufacture their own in fact, that can create a local wireless internet connection. If you guys dont have a wireless connection at home and you're unlikely to get one in the near future then these are a good solution, they cost around $15-$50US.

If you're a Mac user and your Mac is newish (like 2004 or newer) I can teach you a little trick to create a wireless internet connection without the need of a dongle or anythng.

Don't suppose you could teach me that trick? My Mac Mini has an airport card in there (Airport Extreme maybe, I'll double check) but my DS doesn't like the security method it uses.

Ok Pure. It's complicated and if you're syaing the DS doesn't like the WEP Transitional security I'm guessing that's coming from your Airport basestation? I had that problem too and resorted to turn my security OFF completely, only using MAC filtering.

However. If you're Mac mini is getting it's internet from the ethernet cord (ie, it's plugged in with a regualr blue network cable) then we should eb able to do this.

Goto you're control panel and click on "Sharing"
Second from teh bttom should be "Internet Sharing" turn it on.
On the options to the right, select Share your connection from "ethernet"
Below, tick "Airport"

From your Airport menu (I'm hoping it's up the top right corner, you might have to enable it somehow) select "Create Network"
call it "DS Net" or whatever. I wouldn't bother with a password since the network it will create probably wont be big enough for the niehbours to find but if you wanna be safe you can do that.

now it gets complicated.

Open the program 'Terminal' you will find it int he Utilities folder (or just use spotlight)
Termin is all unix and shit and strictly for nerds, I once had a heart attack using Terminal because it's so nerdy.
type in if config en1
press enter, NUMBERS will appear.
look for "inet ###.###.###.### netmask blah blah blah"
write down the number after inet on paper. Mine was '10.0.1.198', yours might be different. This is your computer's IP number on the network.

now type in dig
near the botton there will be "SERVER: ###.###.###.###"
This is your DNS server.

NOW GOTO YOUR DS
Enter this stuff in:
SSID: Whatever you decided to name your network when you created it. eg. 'DS Net' or 'Hey neighbors dont click this'
Auto-obtain IP Address: No
IP Address: Take the first numper you wrote down. Youre computer's ip address. But, bake the last digit bigger, eg. 10.0.1.200 (it's important to note, don't get carried away, don't make the last number higher than 254)
Subnet mask: 255.255.255.0
Gateway: The first IP Address again but unchanged. (e.g. 10.0.1.198)
Auto-obtain DNS: No
Primary DNS: your DNS SERVER, the number you got under server when you typed dig.

Test it and cross your fingers. Should all work fine. What can be lame is that often, after a restart, your computer's IP address will change so to get your DS back online again, you'll have to go back into terminal ang type if config en1 again and mate note of the change and update the gateway setting on your ds, This can be a pain but when you gota battle ya gotta battle.

If you're having trouble with the first step (can't selecte share ethernet connection) then your mac mini is connected wirelessles and in technological lameness, you can't share the connection you're using through the same port. If that's the case you'll have no option but to disable your wireless network's security. Just make sure you check that one over with your folks or whoever runs your home's network. There's otherways to protect your network (making it invisible or MAC filtering are fine) so investigate those if they get paranoid.

Thanks RAB, though that "if config en1" command doesn't work. I tried going with ip rather than if though that didn't work (made sense to try that though). These instructions are very similar to some others I tried a while back and they still didn't work, though I think I did have security on that time. Also you mentioned MAC filtering, does this go automatically, or do I need more commands for Terminal?

MAC filtering is apart of setting up your airport. Baiscally you jsut want to say no to any form of password and goto Advanced. Formt ehre you can setup MAC access and you put in your DS' MAC code (I should point out MAC is some sorta network identification thing, NOT short for Macintosh) along with your computer's and any other wireless devices you have.

Yeah I know what the MAC thing is. How do I find the MAC code for my DS? And are you sure about that "if config en1" command, or is there a typo?

EDIT: Nevermind, found the typo. Meant to be "ifconfig en0". Still, didn't work anywho. Thanks anyways.

I know this thread has "expired" but i was wondering if a bluetooth connection would work for the whole connecting thing?
