This is pushing the last forum-related post off the front page, but that's okay because this post is very related: here are all the tickets Eevee (and myself) have recently created, related to the forums. To summarize, here is what we have come up with (and taken from all of your suggestions), in no particular order:

- Cache parsed posts (also post formats)
- Forum search
- Polls
- Rewrite SVG.pm (related to polls)
- Thread and forum administration
- Smileys!
- Flood control!
- PMs

I would like your input on a few of these, most notably flood control. I have no idea what would be considered a 'fair' time to wait. Maybe 30 seconds. I like the idea of extending the amount of time you have to wait to post the more you post. The formula could be really simple, like (x (initial wait time) )*(2^(n (number of posts made in y time) )). First post, 30 seconds, second post, 60 seconds, third post, 120 seconds, fourth, 240 seconds, so on and so forth. But with that, we need to determine what y amount of time is. Initial amount of time x2? We don't want to make the user wait too long; punishing them for posting a lot doesn't seem fair. I think the initial amount should be fairly small, though, because then with this formula, maybe 5 posts will give them the hint that they are posting too much within y time.

EDIT: These things aren't done yet. These are on our to-do list. I am asking for suggestions on HOW these should be done (sorta), and maybe you can tell us priorities.

You could try X1.5, that would give 30 45 68 102 153 and so on, that way it won't add up quite so fast, also, did you make the flood control so that it saves the post so you can wait for the time, then post it?

I love how everyone jumps right into the "mash your keyboard keys" and "action game" threads, but completely ignore our important news threads. And you guys wonder why I treat you like shit.

1.5x could work better, but I still think the base should be lower as well. 30 seconds seems like a long wait. And I don't think saving the post would really help anything; if you have posted more than x times in 30 seconds, you don't deserve to have special treatment.

You may have noticed I stopped asking for suggestions quite so much.

Users don't have a damn clue what they want.

wait time = ceiling(25 sec*sqrt(number of posts in y time))
y = 600 sec?
1: 25 sec
2: 36 sec (cumulative: 61 sec)
3: 44 sec (105 sec)
4: 50 sec (155 sec)
5: 56 sec (211 sec)
6: 61 sec (272 sec)

I just registered here, just to reply to one person in a thread. The first thing I noticed is a lack of 'quote' button. But that's mostly useful in long, involved threads where you want to respond to someone 20 posts up, not on the short Q&A threads, or long game threads, that are the best of this site's forums. So that's a low priority.

@ Latiass: The reason game threads are popular, is they are easy and don't involve much thought, and are familiar from other forums, even if they aren't relevant here. They are very difficult to kill, most big forums I go to just create a spam forum section for people to fire away without others having to look at it.

Here's a big well though out essay on the subject. 'Tis better than I could write.

Quotes are made by
text
, but I suppose they are easy to implement.

Actually, it's not that adding it is difficult, it's figuring out how it should be laid out, and also deciding the method of doing it. I have an idea, and I'm gonna try it later ...

i know that you arent takeing any more sujestions, and that it might be hard to set up, but what about email, then we would have (name)@veekun.com.
have we thought about making it so the time goes down when they dont post for a while?

I'd say a 20 second flood control with 10 second increments would be best, at least for me. I don't spam, but I tend to fire off lots of posts within a very short period of time. My posts are usually pretty involved so it would probably take more than 30 seconds to write, but in case I needed to type something quickly, I would rather not have to wait four minutes to do that. The forums aren't so active that it's required.

If you could add Flood control to the shoutbox, though, that'd be cool. That could be however exponential you want.
